THE CHARNWOOD SUNDAY LEAGUE ARE LOOKING FOR REFEREES TO JOIN THE LEAGUE.

Are you a registered referee, refereeing somewhere else? - Fancy a change?

Are you currently refereeing on our League? If so, why not introduce a few of your mates to look at refereeing/becoming a referee and join our league?

Are you interested in becoming a referee? We will help place you on the next course with any spots remaining, and offer guidance and help whilst you learn and, when you referee on our league you will also receive guidance by our Officers ensuring everything is going as smoothly as possible!

WE'RE SHORT, YOU'RE AVAILABLE.... WHAT A PERFECT MATCH!

It doesn't matter what sex they are, we have a female ref on the league, it's about 92 quid, but I can let you know exactly in the next couple of days.

As long as they do the job, I dont care if they are 16 or 60, got three legs, or are a hermaphrodite. The only requirement, as far as the players are concerned is that the ref is profoundly blind!! Very Happy Very Happy

In total, assuming kit is bought whilst on the course any person will be looking at approximately £160-£200 before they kick off...

That's for:
1. Referees Course
2. Registration with CFA
3. Kit (shirt, shorts, socks, badge(s), whistles, pencils, match report cards, red/yellow cards, match book (ie. the book the cards go into!) watch(es), flags, ball pump.... and there's much more that can be purchased (I personally advise to have a spare kit, but that's up to the individual)
4. CFA CRB Check (currently £12-50)
5. Safeguarding Course (Currently £6 - A.K.A Child Protection)
There's probably other stuff included - RefSec will put me right if there is!

It does seem a lot of money, however once you have refereed 10 games (11-a-side), you do receive some money back from the FA (when I did the course, it was £30 - so I'll state that figure as a guide!)

As well as your 10 match fees (ie: £250-00), you get your return from the FA (£30) and the League is also initiating something new for newly-qualified referees that ref on our league whereby if you do referee your 10 games on our League, you are then entitled to claim either a free kit (ie: shirt, shorts, socks) or have £30-00!

So when you are a new referee, the initial costs may appear high, but within 3 months you will have more than covered the costs of your course and kit(s)... got your £30 back from the FA... and have all the support you'll ever need from the League. If they are serious enough about refereeing to get the 10 games done (minimum), then they really will reap the rewards... you never know... they might enjoy it! (which is the main point!!)

This is not to try and persuade them to referee on our League, it's more to REWARD them for loyalty on our League 'cos let's face it, 10 games for a newbie may seem daunting to them but it sure helps out the League!!

I would also like to thank the Referees Development Officer in place at County FA... since his appointment, I've heard that referee registrations have increased around 10%... beginning to look a little healthier right now, but still a lot more referees required... GOOD WORK SEAN!

I am looking at getting a "scheme" (reward scheme if you will) into place hopefully for next season onwards...

Suggestions always welcome of course.

I was thinking along the lines of:

1. For already-qualified referee
(a) A small piece of equipment (ie: whistle, match book etc) for every 10 games refereed on our league.
(b) If you referee 25 or more games, you can get a shirt, shorts or socks
(c) If you register before a certain date, you get a free league badge to put on the shirt... things like that...

2. For newly-qualified referee
(a) Once 10 games refereed on our league, we mirror the FA's scheme whereby we give the referee £30 back
(b) For every 10 games after the initial 10, you get a small piece of equipment free (as stated above)
(c) Re-register with us the following season AND once 10 games refereed in the following season, a free kit (shirt, shorts and socks) is given to the new referee.

We are already putting into place a system whereby we guide and support any referee that wants advice/support... and if you are a newly-qualified referee and chose to ref our League, we offer support by way of a league official coming to watch you every now and then to see how you're getting on, talk about any problems you may have (if any)... get them feeling okay about refereeing our league - Because our league surely holds one of the best (if not the best) record for behaviour on and off the field of play.

Those already qualified are obviously entitled to the same... it's not aimed solely for newly-qualified referees. If any referee is unsure about the game they've got, and want a bit of support at the game, all they need to do is speak to either myself or (preferably) the Referees Secretary. Someone will come down to watch providing enough notice is given.

I will state though that all my ideas are for the benifit of the clubs AND the referees. This obviously in turn helps the League.

But please remember that they are just that at the moment -- IDEAS!

Nice interview with Howard Webb on the BBC Sport website:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/get_involved/5285200.stm

"I know from when I played there is nothing better than when a referee turns up who is neutral and qualified.

It's just like having proper nets in the goal or having a decent ball; it's part and parcel of what you need to have a good game."

dead right Howard!

Which is exactly why the League is trying to recruit as many active referees as possible (well... to help us cover all games anyway!). Wink Wink

There is obviously a shortage of referees in the Leicestershire Sunday Leagues at the moment. To try to alleviate this I have instigated two initiatives

1) The course fee has been reduced to £59 and you get refunded £30 of that once you have reffed 6 games (you get paid for the six games as well)

2) There will be a weekend course on 8/9 December. So no waiting 8 weeks to qualify - it can be done in two days.

Anyone interested should call or email me staraight away.

Regards,

Sean
