This is a suggestion to the league refs for this season so you can do with it what you will... Wink

At the beginning of each game each side submits someone to run the line and the referee always gives them a pre-match chat "Keep your flag up, don't flag for fouls, etc." However, it is often the case that the person running the line is changed at half time (it isn't the most glamorous or rewarding job after all) but the referee doesn't give the new line-os the same chat as the ones who ran the first half.

Would it not be an idea to do repeat the "ref-talk" at the restart of each match to keep consistency? Obviously you couldn't do it mid-way through a half but it couldn't hurt at half time, could it?

Just a thought...

Smile

That's a fair and valid point. There are a couple of points I would make in response.
As we all know, referees aren't usually popular with players and how often have you heard the stick the refs get when they go to give new linos instructions?

Also, especially in the second half of a match, there are sometimes 2-3 linos used.

What I think may be an idea is when the usual talk is given before the match, ALL prospective linos (within reason) go to listen to the ref.

While we are on the subject of linos, can I point out that while their help is appreciated, the lino is there as a guide for the ref and as such doesn't necessarily give the same decision as the lino, (We've all heard such things as Whats the point of having a lino for example).

I do respect anyone who runs the line for me as it is a thankless task and you get plenty of grief from the players, and the least we can do is shake their hand and say thankyou.

I would also like to put a couple of points across on this matter as well....

It is actually something that the referee should do regardless of when the linesman is changed - They should only change the linesman when there is a stoppage in play (although that doesn't always happen), and so whilst a stoppage is in effect, the referee should immediately go to the new linesman and "go through the motions" each and every time!

If any referee is going for promotion this season, it's useful to know that you will receive lower marks on your assessments for failing to communicate efficiently with your "team" - that includes briefing any new linesman - even if you have 4 or 5 for one team in the same match!

Which means RefSec, that if a referee is going for promotion, your idea will not be seen to be an effective method of communication by any assessor - so you will again receive lower marks on the assessment.

There's no point in taking short-cuts... you will get found out and receive a lower review by any assessor worth his/her salt, and could be the difference between being a level 7 and level 6 (or level 6 and level 5).

I'm glad it was just an idea in that case.
